French Journalist Quits Broadcaster Over Nazi Massacre Comparison

A prominent French journalist on Sunday announced he was stepping down from his role as an expert analyst for broadcaster RTL after provoking an uproar by comparing French actions during colonial rule in Algeria to a World War II massacre committed by Nazi forces in France. Jean-Michel Aphatie, a veteran reporter and broadcaster, insisted that while he would not be returning to RTL he wholly stood by his comments made on the radio station in late February equating atrocities committed by France in Algeria with those of Nazi Germany in occupied France.  "I will not return to RTL. It is my decision," the journalist wrote on the X, after he was suspended from air for a week by the radio station. On February 25 he said on air: "Every year in France, we commemorate what happened in Oradour-sur-Glane -- the massacre of an entire village. But we have committed hundreds of these, in Algeria. Are we aware of this?" He was referring to the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, wh...

Maharana Pratap, Shivaji Our Heroes Not Akbar Or Aurangzeb: Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said that "our ideals and national heroes" are Maharana Pratap, Veer Shivaji and Guru Govind Singh, not Akbar or Aurangzeb. "Akbar can never be a hero. Be it Akbar or Aurangzeb, their mentality towards Hindus was the same. They hatched many conspiracies to trample the eternal tradition of India," he said. He was speaking after unveiling the statue of Veer Shiromani Maharana Pratap at Dadri. CM Adityanath said that only a warrior who fights an army of millions with 20 thousand soldiers can be "our true hero". "Haldighati gave the status of a national hero to Maharana Pratap and forced Akbar to kneel down by taking back the lost areas of Mewar in his lifetime," the chief minister added. He also praised Mahrana Pratap's horse Chetak. "The devotion of his horse Chetak was also amazing. Even today, people respect the soil of Haldighati as a pilgrimage." He stressed, "The ...

Manipur's Meitei And Thadou Tribe Organisations Make A Peace Breakthrough

Two influential civil society organisations of Manipur's Meitei community and the indigenous distinct tribe Thadou in a joint press conference today called for working toward bringing peace in Manipur. Members of the Meitei Alliance and the Thadou Inpi Manipur called the joint announcement in Delhi today a "significant and historic moment" as they met for the first time on a common platform and for a common goal since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023. The Meitei Alliance, an umbrella body of Meitei civil society organisations globally, and the Thadou Inpi Manipur, which says it is the apex body of the Thadou tribe in the state, in a joint statement gave a six-point agreement that they said could work as the foundation on which successive small steps can be taken to restore peace and rebuild lives in the state bordering Myanmar. "From the perspective of the Thadou right from day one it is very clear that we want peace... Unless and until you identify wh...

The Gauhati High Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani in connection with a case lodged by the city police following the outrage over the 'India's Got Latent' show. The high court had on February 18 granted interim bail to Chanchlani in the case. "After going through the case diary, the high court granted anticipatory bail to the petitioner," his advocate Joyraj Borah told PTI. Along with Borah, Chanchlani's counsels Hiranya Kumar Nath, Apoorv Srivastava and Avinash Lalwani argued that their client appeared before the investigating officer and cooperated in the case as per the previous directions of the HC. The bench of Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita pronounced the anticipatory bail by turning the interim relief absolute. The FIR was registered by the city police on February 10 under the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhtia (BNS), IT Act, Cinematograph Act and Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. Chanchlani on February 27 ap...

Image
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma attended a meeting of leaders of two Myanmar-based rebel groups in the state capital Aizawl in an official capacity in sync with the central government, sources in the state government told NDTV today. Some reports alluding to the meeting as unusual are misleading, the sources who are privy to the matter said, adding it is unfortunate they have cast aspersions on the chief minister without considering the larger context. "The central government knows. The meeting was possible only because of them," one of the sources told NDTV on phone from Aizawl, requesting anonymity. The leaders of two pro-democracy rebel groups from Myanmar, the Chinland Council and the Interim Chin National Consultative Council (ICNCC), met in Aizawl on February 27 and signed an agreement to merge to form the Chin National Council (CNC).
