This was the modus operandi of Mukeem Khan, a conman who had cheated over 50 women across the country, including a woman judge who failed to see through his lies. Khan, 38, a resident of Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch recently for extorting money from women on false pretexts. He created multiple accounts on matrimonial websites with fake identities and trapped women in his intricate web of lies. A large piece of amber used for years as a doorstop has just been valued at around $1 million (Rs 8.4 crore), according to EL PAIS . The 3.5-kilogramme stone was dug up by an elderly woman from a stream bed near Colti, Romania, and then used in her house to hold open doors. It was later discovered that the stone was one of the largest pieces of amber, which is the resin of a tree fossilised for millions of years. This type, known as rumanit because of its reddish hue, is mined around Colti. After she died in 1991, the house had been passed on to a relative who felt that the doorstop could be more valuable than originally thought. It was then sold to the Romanian state, and experts from the Museum of History in Krakow confirmed the amber to be between 38 and 70 million years old. Motorists using private vehicles with a functional global navigation satellite system (GNSS) will be allowed to travel toll-free on highways and expressways up to 20 kilometres daily with effect from Tuesday, according to a government notification. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways amended the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, which has come to effect from Tuesday. Under the new regulations, known as the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Amendment Rules, 2024, fees will now be charged on the actual distance travelled if the distance exceeds 20 kilometres. The body of a woman, who had gone missing earlier, was found dead in bushes in Gujarat's Vadodara. The woman has been identified as Vidya Ramesh Vasava, a resident of Shinor village in the district. According to police reports, four men -- Pravin Shanabhai Vasava, Kiran Shanabhai Vasava, Gangaram Gangubhai Vasava, and Chunilal Mangaldas, all residents of Shinor and nearby villages -- have been arrested in connection with the case. The investigation revealed that Kiran, the woman's brother-in-law, suspected her of being involved in another relationship. Officials said he had been pressuring her to marry him, but she refused. In retaliation, the accused along with his associates allegedly entered the Monter's Boat Training Centre, where they assaulted and raped the victim. Police on Sunday booked the owner of the three-storey building here that collapsed a day ago, killing eight people, officials said. Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Amit Verma said a police team is investigating the matter and the accused will be arrested soon. A senior police official said an FIR has been lodged against Rakesh Singhal, the owner of the Harmilap building in the Transport Nagar area. The building collapsed on Saturday evening triggering a major rescue operation. Eight people were killed in the incidents while 28 others were injured in the incident. The website, which tracks outages by collating status reports from several sources including users, showed less than 164 reports of outages in the US as of 11:01 am ET (1501 GMT). As it spreads quickly throughout Europe, a recently discovered Covid-19 subvariant called XEC is drawing the attention of health authorities globally. XEC was first discovered in Germany, but reports of it have since spread to the Netherlands and other parts of Western Europe. Physicians and scientists are keeping a close eye on XEC, as it appears that it may eventually overtake the current dominant subvariant, KP.3.1.1. Right now in the US, this subvariant is the most common strain. "The launch was successfully carried out from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha," an official of the ministry said. He said that the launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters. "It was conducted under the aegis of Strategic Forces Command," the official added. The United States said Thursday it had secured the release of 135 political prisoners from Nicaragua, the latest mass transfer by President Daniel Ortega's increasingly authoritarian government. Personal notes that played a key role in convicting child serial killer Lucy Letby were reportedly written under the guidance of counsellors to help the nurse manage severe stress. The handwritten notes, which included disturbing phrases such as "I am evil I did this" and "I killed them on purpose because I am not good enough to care for them," were used as evidence during Letby's trial. Letby was convicted in 2023 for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six others, including two attempts on one child. Earlier this year, she proclaimed her innocence while receiving an additional whole-life sentence for the attempted murder of another baby girl. She is currently serving 15 whole-life sentences for her crimes, committed at the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit between June 2015 and June 2016. A special court for Pocso cases in the Kerala capital on Wednesday sentenced a 37-year-old man to imprisonment till his death for the brutal crime of harassing his daughter for several years right from when she was five years old. Pocso court judge M.P. Shibu, after hearing all the sides, sentenced the man to jail till his death and also directed the District Legal Service Authority to pay the victim a sum of Rs 1.50 lakh from the fine that was collected from the accused. The man, a casual labourer hailing from suburban Aruvikara in the state capital district, had remarried after his first wife passed away and his daughter, who was one-and-a-half-year-old then, was staying with them. He was arrested last year after his daughter disclosed her ordeal to her teacher when she came to take her Class 10 public examination conducted by the state Education Department. Finding the girl deeply disturbed, the teacher asked her the reason, and the girl broke down, saying that on the previous da
