"India Responded Resolutely, Determinedly": S Jaishankar On China Border Row

India has had an "exceptionally difficult" challenge along the northern borders in the last three years and the country responded to it very resolutely and has been maintaining the kind of military deployment necessary for national security, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday on the lingering row in eastern Ladakh with China. He said this in an address at the FICCI, while explaining how the PM Modi government makes choices after choices with confidence however difficult and tough they may be. "It could even be what happens at our border. Again you all know in the last three years, we have had an exceptionally difficult time in terms of the challenges on our northern borders," Mr Jaishankar said. "Even though this happened in the middle of Covid, yet we responded very resolutely, very determinedly, and to date we are still deployed in whatever manner is necessary for our national security," he said. Israel Says It Hit 450 Targets In Gaza In 24 Hours As War Rages, US Alarmed

Israel sharply stepped up strikes on the Gaza Strip, pounding the length of the Palestinian enclave and killing hundreds in a new, expanded phase of the war that Washington said veered from Israeli promises to do more to protect civilians. The Israeli military said on Friday it had struck more than 450 targets in Gaza from land, sea, and air over the past 24 hours - the most since a truce collapsed last week and about double the daily figures typically reported since then. With most Gazans now displaced and unable to access any aid, hospitals overrun and food running out, the main U.N. agency there said society was "on the verge of a full-blown collapse" and its ability to protect people there was "reducing fast". Residents and the Israeli military both reported intensified fighting in both northern areas, where Israel had previously said its troops had largely completed their tasks last month, and in the south where they mounted a new assault this week. Indonesian Rescue Team Finds Body Of Last Missing Hiker On Volcano

The last hiker missing after a volcanic eruption on Indonesia's Mount Marapi was found dead today, rescuers said. According to a BBC report, the final hiker's body was recovered on Wednesday by Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency.  ''The joint search and rescue team has found one victim of the Mount Marapi eruption, who is now in the process of being evacuated,'' Abdul Malik, head of the Padang Search and Rescue Agency, told reporters on Wednesday evening. Basarnas, the national search and rescue agency, earlier identified the final hiker as a woman. Notably, Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra spewed an ash tower 3,000 metres (9,800 feet) -- taller than the volcano itself -- into the sky on Sunday. Hundreds of rescuers worked for days to find the missing hikers, who had been carried down the mountain in bodybags in an arduous search effort hampered by further eruptions and bad weather that forced workers to intermittently take shelter.
