Delhi Records Warmest January Since 2019, Air Quality Sees Improvement

The national capital wrapped up a rather warm January with Friday's maximum temperature reaching 27 degrees Celsius, making it the city's warmest day in the month since 2019. The month's average maximum temperature was 21.1 degrees Celsius, a notch above the long-period average of 20.1 degrees Celsius, marking it as Delhi's warmest January since 2019. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, nighttime temperatures were also higher than usual. The average minimum temperature for the month settled at 8.5 degrees Celsius, a notch above the LPA of 7.5 degrees Celsius, and the highest since 2017 when it was 8.7 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists attributed the warmer-than-usual January to the absence of strong western disturbances, which typically bring rain, lowering the temperature. "This month, while western disturbances did pass through north India, most of them were feeble and did not result in substantial snowfall or rainfall," said Mahesh P...

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma Rules Out Uniform Civil Code implementation

Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to implement UCC, but the Chief Minister of another hill state has ruled out a similar step. The implementation of Uniform Civil Code is neither practical nor appropriate, given the country's diverse cultural and tribal communities, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said today. He, however, acknowledged that certain aspects of civil laws could be made uniform while protecting the rights of indigenous communities. Pointing at Uttarakhand, which became the first state to implement the UCC while excluding tribal customs from its purview, Mr Sangma said in a country as diverse as India, a Uniform Civil Code is not viable.  His statement comes amid growing debates on the UCC, with Assam expressing interest in following Uttarakhand's lead in implementing the code. "A Uniform Civil Code, as a concept of making sure that everything becomes uniform, is not possible in India," Mr Sangma said. "There are tribal...

Middle Children Are "More Humble, Honest And Cooperative" Than Their Siblings: Study

A recent study suggests that middle children may have an advantage, implying they possess more desirable traits than their older and younger siblings. This research further ignites the long-standing discussion on the impact of birth order on personality development.  Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler first introduced the concept of birth order shaping personality over a century ago, sparking ongoing debate among experts ever since. While the science remains unsettled, stereotypes have filled the gap- like the assertive, intelligent firstborn and the "spoiled" youngest child. Middle children, meanwhile, are often seen as overlooked, described by WebMD as "the idea that if you're neither the oldest nor the youngest, you receive less attention from your parents and feel 'caught in the middle.'" However, according to Canadian researchers Michael Ashton of Brock University and Kibeom Lee of the University of Calgary, being a middle child might be an advan...

How Childhood Trauma Impacts Our Brains, Bodies - And Even Our Genes

Image
In 1966, Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu introduced extreme policies to increase the country's birth rate. This led to the widespread abandonment of children, who ended up in orphanages in appalling conditions where they received no care, attention or love. Though tragic, this infamous ā€œnatural experimentā€ has allowed us to learn a great deal about the effects of early-life trauma on the brain. Research into these children found that many of them had smaller brain volumes, which partially explained their poor cognitive performance. This atrophy was more severe in children who had spent longer in institutions. Childhood is the most sensitive period for neurodevelopment , but sadly, it can be disrupted in many ways, from abuse or neglect to exposure to war and violence. A QUESTION OF STRESS Understanding the neurobiological effects of childhood adversity can help us understand and treat its long-term psychological effects. Evidence suggests that these particularly affect t...

Hamas Hands Over First Israeli Hostages As Gaza Truce Begins

The first three Israeli hostages returning home under a long-awaited Gaza truce were transferred to the Red Cross on Sunday, a Hamas official and the Israeli military said. The hostages, all women, "were officially handed over to the Red Cross" in Gaza City ahead of their return to Israel, the senior Hamas official told AFP. It came hours after the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect in the morning, nearly three hours later than scheduled, after more than 15 months of war. During the delay, Israel's military said it was continuing to operate, with the territory's civil defence agency reporting 19 people killed and 25 wounded in bombardments. Minutes after the truce began, the United Nations said the first trucks carrying sorely needed humanitarian aid had entered the Palestinian territory, as displaced, war-weary Palestinians set off across the devastated Gaza Strip to return to their home areas. The quantum of the sentence will be pronounced by the special court on Monday, where the maximum punishment can be the death penalty and the minimum punishment can be life imprisonment. US immigration authorities will carry out mass arrests of undocumented immigrants across the country on Tuesday, a top border official in the incoming administration of Donald Trump has said. The move would be among the first by Republican Trump, who returns to the White House on Monday, to uphold a campaign pledge to deport millions of undocumented immigrants from the United States. The remarks on Friday by Trump's incoming "border czar" Tom Homan to Fox News came in response to reports in the Wall Street Journal and other US outlets that Trump's new administration planned to carry out an "immigration raid" in Chicago beginning Tuesday. "There's going to be a big raid across the country. Chicago is just one of many places," said Homan, a former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who oversaw a policy that separated migrant parents and children at the border under the first Trump administration. 2 Top Economists To NDTV On Why India Needs '1 Nation, 1 Poll'

Finance Commission Chairman Arvind Panagariya in an affirmation to the idea of 'One Nation, One Election' explained that frequent elections do not give enough opportunities to the government to carry out reforms. NK Singh, the former Chairman of the Finance Commission, also supported 'One Nation, One Election' as a key area of economic reforms, citing wasteful expenditure and distractions due to "elections being held every second day". Both economists spoke to NDTV Editor-in-Chief Sanjay Pugalia in an exclusive interview. Mr Panagariya, who served as the first Vice Chairman of the government think tank NITI Aayog from January 2015 to August 2017, told NDTV, "One Nation, One Election constitutes a very, very far reaching important reform, far beyond the political matrix, which has huge implications for economic growth and development." Caught Ticketless? Rail Fines Could Turn Into 'Yellow Cards' In UK

Train passengers travelling without a ticket should be allowed to go scot-free with a "yellow card", rather than being handed fines or prosecuted for their actions, train companies in Britain have been urged, according to a BBC report. Rail watchdog Transport Focus suggested that the train companies introduce a novel system that "makes things fairer for everyone". The suggestion comes in the backdrop of multiple cases where passengers were forced into lengthy legal proceedings over small amounts of money. Last year, 22-year-old Sam Williamson was threatened with prosecution by train operator, Northern Rail, after he mistakenly bought an invalid £3.65 (Rs 385.22) ticket using his 16-25 railcard. The full price of the ticket was £5.50 (Rs 580.46) - £1.85 (rs 195.25) more. Mr Williamson's case prompted widespread criticism of Northern Rail which was forced to withdraw all live prosecutions against the passenger. "Transport Focus has long been concerned abo...

Twenty-three of them have been rescued so far. "While 20 of them suffered minor injuries, three of them sustained grievous injuries. The rescue operation is underway and wil...

Winds were expected to drop Friday around Los Angeles, bolstering a huge firefighting effort at the five major blazes wreaking havoc around America's second biggest city.
