Iowa Becomes Latest US State To Adopt Near-Total Abortion Ban

After a year-long legal battle, Iowa became the latest US state to enact a near-total abortion ban on Monday, keeping the charged issue of reproductive rights at the forefront of November's presidential election. The law prohibits terminating nearly all pregnancies after six weeks -- the point at which a fetal heartbeat can be detected -- even though many women do not realize they are pregnant at this stage. Previously, abortion was permitted in the Midwestern state up to 20 weeks of gestation. Initially passed last year and signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds, the ban was placed on hold by a judge but then reinstated following a narrow 4-3 ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court last month. "This morning, more than 1.5 million women in Iowa woke up with fewer rights than they had last night because of another Trump Abortion Ban," US Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, wrote on X. Her Republican opponent, former president Dona

Devotees clad in "skimpy western dress" and shorts will not be allowed to enter Goddess Kalika temple in Ratlam city of Madhya Pradesh, its priest said. "Devotees dressed in western and skimpy attire and shorts (half pants) won't be allowed to enter the temple to protect its sanctity," priest Rajendra Sharma told PTI. Several plaques mentioning the type of banned clothes are put up around this four-century-old temple. "Any devotee clad in indecent dress won't be allowed to enter the temple or the sanctum sanatorium," Mr Sharma said, adding that such devotees can have a darshan from outside. The temple is looked after by the Ratlam district administration under the Court of Wards Act. "I have learnt the temple management committee's decision to ban the western outfits," tehsildar Rishabh Thakur said. Mr Sharma claimed King Ratan Singh, who carved Ratlam, had built this temple 400 years ago and consecrated the clan goddess. Welco

All About Golan Heights, The Disputed Territory Between Israel And Syria

The Golan Heights, a rocky plateau where 12 youths were killed Saturday amid clashes between Lebanon's Hezbollah and Israeli forces, is a strategic territory partially captured by Israel from Syria. Following the conquest of about two-thirds of the plateau during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, Israel 1981 annexed the area in a move not recognised by the international community, with the exception of the United States since 2019. Rich in water, the Golan Heights overlooks northern Israel's Galilee region and the Sea of Galilee and dominates the route to Damascus on the Syrian-controlled side. Annexation  The Golan, the region's biblical Hebrew name, or Jawlan in Arabic, has been coveted by empires and foreign rulers for millennia. It was occupied by Herod, the Franks, the Ottomans and others, and eventually made part of Syria which gained its independence from the French in 1946. Most of the territory was captured by Israel on June 9, 1967, after fierce battles with the Sy

Tourists Duped Into Eating Dog Meat In Bali, Authorities Launch Crackdown

A recent investigation has revealed that Australian tourists were being tricked into eating dog meat skewers during their holidays on an Indonesian island. On Thursday, Bali officials seized hundreds of kilograms of raw dog meat and numerous skewers from vendors, despite a comprehensive ban on the trade of such meat on the popular resort island, the Independent reported.  According to AFP, public order officers in Bali's Jembrana district seized at least 500 dog meat skewers and 56 kilograms of raw dog meat from various sellers following a series of inspections. Dewa Nyoman Rai Dharmadi, head of the Bali Public Order Agency, said that inspections conducted this week found three vendors still peddling dog meat, defying local regulations that prohibit its sale. Two of the vendors had previously received warnings from Bali Police regarding their engagement in the trade of dog meat.  "We won't suddenly take legal action, but we are giving them the chance to know the ban an

Franco-Swiss Airport Briefly Evacuated For "Security Reasons" Ahead Of Olympics Opening Ceremony

A Franco-Swiss airport was temporarily evacuated following a bomb threat Friday, hours after arson attacks disrupted the French rail network ahead of the Olympics opening ceremony. EuroAirport, located on the French side of the border near Basel, said on its website that it had reopened and that flight operations were gradually restarting. Earlier, the Basel-Mulhouse airport said it had been evacuated and closed "for safety reasons". The prefecture of France's Haut-Rhin department told AFP the evacuation had been due to a bomb threat and that bomb-disposal experts were deployed. Several French airports, including EuroAirport, had to be evacuated late last year due to a series of fake bomb threats. EuroAirport welcomed eight million passengers in 2023. The evacuation came as French authorities were hunting for the perpetrators of arson attacks on the high-speed train network, which disrupted travel for hundreds of thousands of people. The Paris Olympics opening cere

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, Human Resources Development Minister Nara Lokesh and several other ministers were among those who stood up. One of the women MLAs heard saying she had seven cases booked against her. "Cases were booked against all those who were fighting politically. He (former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy) did not want to see any of them out (of jail) but people sent all of them directly to the Assembly," Naidu said in the Assembly while presenting a White Paper on the law and order situation during the YSRCP rule. Mr Naidu vowed to place Andhra Pradesh in the first position in the country in terms of the best law and order situation. He said all the politically motivated cases would be reviewed. T

Doctors Remove Cricket-Ball Sized Rare Tumour Weighing 30 Grams

A 35-year-old woman has been given a new lease of life after doctors successfully removed a cricket-ball-sized rare non-cancerous tumour from the outer part of her genitalia. The tumour, known as vulvar leiomyoma, weighed 30 grams and measured 10x8 cm. The patient had noticed a painless, slow-growing mass in the outer part of her vulva over the past 15 years. Initially misdiagnosed as ovarian cancer at another facility, she sought a second opinion at Fortis Escorts Faridabad. Upon admission, she reported heaviness and swelling in her private parts, but there were no associated symptoms like bleeding or discharge. Her medical history included hypothyroidism, for which she was under regular medication and no family history of similar gynaecological conditions. A thorough physical examination revealed a firm mass near the urethra. Pelvic examination and routine laboratory tests confirmed the non-cancerous nature of the mass, and MRI findings suggested a vulvar tumour. Due to the involve

Thousands Protest Netanyahu Outside US Capitol, Call For Gaza Ceasefire

Thousands gathered in Washington on Wednesday to protest Benjamin Netanyahu and call for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, as the Israeli premier prepared to address the US Congress. Crowds carrying Palestinian flags and signs ranging from left-wing slogans to Bible verses gathered outside the Capitol calling for a ceasefire and the arrest of Netanyahu, as prosecutors seek a warrant for him at the International Criminal Court. "The hypocrisy of our (US) politicians today has gone beyond any limits," Mo, a 58-year-old protester, told AFP. Netanyahu will address Congress later Wednesday in a high-profile speech to the US government, Israel's steadfast ally in its war against Hamas. Relations have grown strained as the civilian death count in Gaza has grown, leading to protests in the United States and increasing criticism from President Joe Biden's administration, though little has changed in the way of US military support. Protesters gathered Wednesday were cal

In Budget 2024, The Lok Sabha Election Effect

The first budget of the third term of Narendra Modi government bore a clear imprint of the recent Lok Sabha election, in which the BJP failed to gain majority on its own and had to depend on allies to form government. The reaction went beyond the special packages for Nitish Kumar's Bihar and Chandrababu Naidu's Andhra Pradesh – a compensatory gesture for the blocked special category status that both states had demanded. The biggest focus of this budget was employment for the country's young people -- across all sectors and including the opportunity for apprenticeship in private companies. The government is also providing a month's salary upto Rs 15,000 to the new recruits through Direct Benefit Transfer. The deal is sweetened for employers with subsidy on the employer's share of Provident Fund Payments. One crore people will get jobs in a year under this project, the minister said, making it clear that the BJP considers unemployment and the subsequent concern amo

Woman, 45, Who Died After DTC Bus Rammed Pillar, Was Family's Sole Breadwinner

When Savita Devi, 45, left home for work on Monday morning, little did her family know this was the last time they would see her. Shortly after she left, her son-in-law Arun received a call from police asking him to reach Maharaja Agrasen Hospital in Punjabi Bagh. The DTC bus she took to work had rammed into a pillar near Shivaji Park metro station in west Delhi, killing her and injuring 34 others. "I rushed to the hospital with my wife. Doctors at the hospital had declared my mother-in-law dead. There were injury marks on her head and legs. I learnt that she was sitting behind the bus driver's seat," said Arun. "My mother-in-law used to travel by bus every day to go to Naraina for work," he said. Savita Devi, who worked as a sweeper with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), was the sole breadwinner of her family. Her husband Om Prakash died due to an ailment. The husband, Ranjeet Kumar, who is a secretary at Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission, had instructed the domestic staff that his wife, who is involved in a child abduction case, should not be allowed in the house, said police. According to Mr Kumar's advocate, Hitesh Gupta, the couple had separated in 2023 and were heading for a divorce. "Ranjeet Kumar had gone out to finalise his divorce petition with Surya on Saturday. Upset at not being allowed in the house, she ingested poison and called up 108 (an ambulance help

Israelis "Not Welcome At Paris Olympic Games", Says French MP, Sparks Row

Portes had said at a rally in support of Palestinians that "the Israeli delegation is not welcome in Paris. Israeli sportspeople are not welcome at the Paris Olympic Games" and called for "mobilisation" around the event. He later told the Parisien newspaper that "France's diplomats should pressure the International Olympic Committee to bar the Israeli flag and anthem, as is done for Russia". "It's time to end the double standard," Portes added. Opposition to Israel's campaign in Gaza was a centrepiece of LFI'

Freedom Of Press May Not Include Sting Operations In All Cases: Kerala High Court

The Kerala High Court has ruled that "freedom of the press" may not include sting operations in all cases but those done by recognised media persons can be considered differently, given their role as the "Fourth Estate" in a democracy. The ruling came as the court heard a petition by two media persons of the Reporter TV channel, accused of trying to conduct a sting operation in jail after they met an imprisoned member of the personal staff of late Chief Minister Oommen Chandy (2011-16) undergoing his term in a case related to the infamous solar scam, seeking to quash the final report filed by the police against them. The court pointed out that the press have to be bonafide and vigilant while conducting sting operations and their intention should be to promote democracy and not to harass or humiliate anyone. "…'sting operation' by a law enforcement agency and recognised media people is to be viewed from a different angle. But there cannot be any unifo

What Delhi Minister Said On Row Over School's "Unapproved" Revised Fee

Delhi Education Minister Atishi has assured action will be taken after several parents of students of Delhi Public School (DPS) Dwarka complained against the institution. Parents of at least 20 students have accused the school of not allowing their children inside classrooms and publishing their names on its official website over an "unapproved" revised fee. "We will take action," she told reporters. The parents say the action followed their refusal to pay the revised fee, which, they claim, was increased "without following Directorate of Education (DoE) norms". The school, in a note for parents on its official website, said it "does not accept the fee rejection order of DoE for the academic session 2023-24." It added it was in the process of "taking all the remedial actions as per law. Hence, there is absolutely no question of fee refund". An email accessed by NDTV shows DPS Dwarka notifying a parent that their child's name wo

Delhi Pollution Under Control Centres To Be Shut From July 15: Petrol Pump Owners

Petrol pump owners said PUC centres will be shut from Monday onwards, expressing their dissatisfaction over the recent proposed hike in rates of pollution certificates by the city government. The operation of the pollution under control (PUC) centres is unviable, they said in a statement issued on Sunday. Delhi government on Thursday increased the PUC certificate charges for petrol, CNG and diesel vehicles after a gap of about 13 years. The hike ranges between Rs 20 and Rs 40. The new rates will be effective as soon as it is notified by the Delhi government, Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot had said. No Independent MLAs - A First For Himachal's Electoral History

With the two-party system taking deep roots in Himachal Pradesh, and the Congress and the BJP coming to power alternately, the presence of Independents has been declining and, in a first, the assembly has no Independent MLAs in the state assembly. With victory in two out of three assembly by-elections, the strength of Congress has increased to 40. This is also the first time that a man and his wife - Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and his wife Kamlesh Thakur - would sit in the House. Kamlesh Thakur's win from the Dehra assembly seat has taken the number of women legislators in the state to two. In the 2022 assembly elections, three Independents - Hoshiyar Singh (Dehra), Ashish Sharma (Hamirpur). and KL Thakur (Nalagarh) - were elected but they resigned after voting for BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan in the Rajya Sabha election on February 27. The Independent MLAs resigned on March 22 and joined the BJP the next day. Their resignation was accepted by Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pat

7 Congress MLAs Cross-Voted In Key Maharashtra Polls: Sources

In a worrying sign for the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra, which was riding high after winning 30 of 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state, at least seven Congress MLAs cross-voted for candidates from the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the Legislative Council polls on Friday, sources said.  The polls, which are generally a straightforward affair, were seen as the semi-finals ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections - expected to be held around November - because 12 candidates were vying for 11 seats.  The opposition alliance had forced the election by fielding one more candidate than it had the numbers to elect, possibly hoping to benefit from cross-voting by MLAs from the ruling coalition, but seems to have ended up losing votes instead. The Maharashtra Assembly has a strength of 288 MLAs but currently has 274 sitting legislators. This meant that each MLC candidate needed 23 first-preference votes to win. The Mahayuti - part of the larger NDA alliance - which consists of th

Rare Mid-Sized Black Hole Spotted At Center Of Swallowed Galaxy: Study

Astronomers have scrutinized a cluster of stars that is the apparent remnant core of a relatively small galaxy that was swallowed by the sprawling Milky Way 8 to 10 billion years ago. What lurks at the center of this cluster has them excited. The researchers said on Wednesday the unusual motion of seven stars in this cluster provides compelling evidence for the presence of an elusive mid-sized black hole at its heart. These are bigger than the class of ordinary black holes formed in the implosion of a single star but smaller than the behemoths residing at the nucleus of most galaxies. The cluster, called Omega Centauri, contains about 10 million stars. The black hole within it is at least 8,200 times as massive as our sun, the researchers said. The supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A* at the center of the Milky Way possesses 4 million times the mass of the sun. And that is dwarfed by supermassive black holes billions of times the mass of the sun in other galaxies. "Th

Video: Huge Landslide On Badrinath National Highway, People Run To Safety

A massive landslide today blocked the Badrinath National Highway in Uttarakhand's Chamoli, disrupting vehicular movement. A 30-second video shows a massive portion of a hill crumbling and falling on the road and large rocks blocking the route at Chungi Dhar in Joshimath. People could be heard screaming due to panic and running for their safety, the video shows. Many of them were also seen capturing the act on their phones. Hundreds of people and vehicles were stuck on both sides of the road due to the landslide. The Badrinath highway was blocked in the morning and the authorities were clearing the debris when the landslide occurred. Police and the administration were immediately called in to clear the debris and the road is likely to open by late night. Heavy rain in parts of Uttarakhand over the past few days triggered landslides in the hills with the highway to Badrinath blocked at a number of points by rubble. A large number of roads have been blocked and several villages i

Law Commission Was Bypassed For New Criminal Laws, Says P Chidambaram

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday claimed that the Centre bypassed the Law Commission in enacting the three new criminal laws that came into effect from July 1. The Law Commission, comprising of retired judges, legal experts, professors, and permanent legal staff, would normally hold consultations with bar council members, and advocate associations and prepare a draft to be presented in the Parliament, he said. But the Law Commission was bypassed and five or six "part-timers" were appointed for a panel, he said on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, replacing the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act. "The laws were not referred to the Law Commission nor was it consulted. This is wrong," Mr Chidambaram said while speaking at a protest organised here by the DMK advocate wing against the new laws. Additional sessions judge VM Pathade allowed his bail application on Wednesday, though the detailed order was not available yet. Mr Khan, in his plea, claimed that most of the allegations against him were "speculative" and there was no concrete evidence. The complaint filed against the actor was politically motivated, said the plea filed through advocate Faiz Merchant. Not a single member or player using the Mahadev Online Book app - which is accused of facilitating online betting on a variety of games and activities - had filed a complaint against any of the accused named in the First Information Report, the application said. The accused cooperated with the investigation since his arrest, it pointed out. The actor was arrested from Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh in April this year after the Bombay High Court rejected his pre-arrest bail plea. Mr Khan, known for films like "Style&quo

The Rajya Sabha MP, on his first trip to the state after being appointed to the top party post, exuded confidence that under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the JD(U) will fare well in the Bihar assembly polls due next year and expand its footprints elsewhere. "Many are hoping that in the light of the party resolution passed last week, there is going to be a confrontation (with the Centre). Such people are in for a disappointment", asserted Mr Jha, a former BJP man whose elevation is being seen as a signal from Nitish Kumar, the JD(U) chief, that he wants good relations with the senior ally. "The resolution has also made it clear that we want help - be it in the form of special status or special package. The Prime Minister is sensitive toward our concerns. In the nex
