Why Demand Union Territory Now? Manipur's Ceasefire-Linked Kuki Group Explains

Image
The demand for a Union Territory carved out of Manipur by nearly two dozen tribes known as Kukis - a term given by the British in colonial times - who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, is due to "necessity" after the Kukis were "ethnically cleansed out of the state capital Imphal", the spokesperson of the Kuki tribes' umbrella organisation of insurgent groups that are under a ceasefire with India told reporters in the hill district Churachandpur. Over two dozen Kuki-Zo insurgent groups come under two umbrella organisations for the purpose of negotiations with India - the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) led by the Kuki National Army, and the United People's Front (UPF) led by the Zomi Revolutionary Army. The KNO and the UPF representing all the others have signed the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement, under which the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in locked storage, to be monitored regularly. Ancient Antarctic Mountains Unearthed By Pink Sands In Australia

What began as an unusual pink hue on the shores of Petrel Cove has led to a surprising discovery. The culprit behind the colourful sand? Garnet, a mineral remnant of an ancient Antarctic mountain range, was previously hidden beneath miles of ice. Scientists were initially perplexed by the pink sand but quickly identified it as garnet. However, the mineral's age and origin were a mystery. Further investigation revealed the garnet to be an astonishing 590 million years old, far older than surrounding geological formations. "The garnet is too young to have come from the Gawler Craton and too old to have come from the eroding Adelaide Fold Belt," says Sharmaine Verhaert , PhD candidate and lead of the University of Adelaide research team. "Garnet requires high temperatures to form and is usually associated with the formation of large mountain belts, and this was a time when the South Australian crust was comparatively cool and non-mountainous." The researchers,

Why Some People Are Protected Against Covid-19, Study Reveals

A new study published in the science journal Nature has revealed why some people never get COVID-19, even after exposure. Researchers conducted a world-first experiment where they intentionally infected healthy volunteers with a pre-Alpha strain of SARS-CoV-2.  They found that people who resist infection have a much faster immune response in their nasal tissues compared to those who get sick. This response includes the activation of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells and a drop in inflammatory white blood cells, which clear the virus before it sets in.  The study also found that people who resist infection have elevated expression of a gene called HLA-DQA2 in nasal cells.  Professor Christopher Chiu, from the Department of Infectious Disease at Imperial College London, and who led the COVID-19 human challenge study, said: "This paper highlights the value of the powerful, cutting-edge approaches applied through collaboration in the first-in-the-world SARS-CoV-2 human

Poll Body Gets Applications For EVM Verification On 8 Lok Sabha Seats

Terming the suspicion of manipulation of the electronic voting machines "unfounded", the Supreme Court had on April 26 rejected the demand for reverting to the old paper ballot system. But at the same time, the top court had opened a window for the aggrieved unsuccessful candidates securing second and third places in the poll results and allowed them to seek verification of micro-controller chips embedded in five per cent EVMs per assembly constituency on a written request upon the payment of a fee to the poll panel. BJP's Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) candidate Sujay Vikhe-Patil has sought verification of the machines from 40 polling stations. Vikhe-Patil had lost to Nilesh Lanke of NCP (Sharad P

"Political Football": Woman Suing UK Intel Services Denies China Spy Claims

A woman accused of "political interference activities" in the UK on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party denied the claims on Tuesday as part of her legal claim against intelligence services. Domestic intelligence service MI5 warned in 2022 that Christine Lee was a Chinese agent who had engaged with members of parliament after she donated £500,000 ($635,000) to Labour MP Barry Gardiner. Lee is now suing the security services, and on Tuesday told a hearing that she was used as a "political football" and that she "categorically denied" the claims. She also alleged that she had been discriminated against "on the grounds of my race". The Security Service submitted to the two-day hearing that the decision was "rational and lawful". "Ms Lee's race and/or nationality played no part in the decision to issue an interference alert," said Victoria Wakefield, lawyer for the Security Service. "As noted, the decision was mad

Philippines Accuses Chinese Ships Of "Ramming", Damaging Boats

The Philippine government on Monday accused Chinese ships of ramming and damaging its boats in the South China Sea during a confrontation in waters off the Second Thomas Shoal, home to a garrison of Filipino troops. "Their actions put at risk the lives of our personnel and damaged our boats." The Second Thomas Shoal has seen an escalating number of confrontations between Chinese and Philippine ships in recent months. These have often taken place during Philippine resupply missions to a garrison of Filipino troops on a grounded navy vessel, the Sierra Madre, aimed at asserting Manila's claims to the reef. The shoal lies about 200 kilometres (120 miles) from the western Philippine island of Palawan and more than 1,000 kilome

The military had announced the daily pauses from 0500 GMT until 1600 GMT in the area from the Kerem Shalom Crossing to the Salah al-Din Road and then northwards. "When the prime minister heard the reports of an 11-hour humanitarian pause in the morning, he turned to his military secretary and made it clear that this was unacceptable to him," an Israeli official said. The military clarified that normal operations would continue in Rafah, the main focus of its operation in southern Gaza, where eight soldiers were killed on Saturday. The reaction from Netanyahu underlined political tensions over the issue of aid coming into Gaza, where international organisations have warned of a growing humanitarian crisis. Evidence Against Hunter Biden "Ugly", Jury Told In Illegal Drugs Case

The evidence against US President Joe Biden's son was grim but established that he was guilty of making a false statement about his use of illegal drugs on a background check form when he bought a gun, a government lawyer told a jury on Monday. "It was personal and it was ugly and it was overwhelming," government prosecutor Leo Wise told the 12-member jury during closing arguments in the trial of the son, Hunter Biden, 54. "But it was also necessary." The federal government case, the first criminal trial of a US president's child, last week offered an intimate view of the younger Biden's years of struggle with alcohol and crack cocaine abuse, which prosecutors say legally precluded him from buying a gun. Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to felony charges both of lying about his addiction when he filled out a government screening document for the Colt Cobra revolver and of illegally possessing the weapon for 11 days. "I have changed my mind... I am going to stand," Farage, 60, told a news conference. He will seek election on July 4 in the fiercely pro-Brexit seat of Clacton, southeast England. Farage said he had had a change of heart as "I can't let down those millions of people" who had supported him throughout previous elections and referendums. The move piles more pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose languishing Conservatives can ill afford to lose votes on its right. Reform is currently polling at around 11 percent, which if replicated at the ballot box could split the right-wing vote, potentially depriving the Conservatives of key seats needed to win re-election. "I genuinely believe we can get more votes than the Conservative party. They are on the brink of total collapse,
