Spain Police Bust Alleged Corpse-Selling Racket

Spanish police on Monday said they had busted the owners of a funeral parlour in Valencia for allegedly selling dead bodies to university research departments for 1,200 euros per corpse. The four suspects, two owners and two employees, also helped the universities dispose of the bodies after they had been studied by incinerating them or disposing of their dismembered parts in other coffins slated for cremation. Most of the bodies were of people without any family. The suspects "falsified documentation to get the bodies from hospitals and retirement homes in order to later sell them to universities for research for 1,200 ($1,300) per corpse," a police statement said. The suspects had sold at least 11 bodies, it added. In some cases, they even billed the universities for cremations which never happened. India Can't Stay Non-Aligned, China Sitting On Frontiers: Shashi Tharoor

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said that with China sitting on India's frontiers, it is not possible for India to remain “truly non-aligned”. He said that the world being in disorder has shaken some of the assumptions of India's foreign policy. "We are still non-aligned and a member of the non-aligned movement. But what does that mean anymore is not very clear, because the two superpowers are no longer the US and the (erstwhile) Soviet Union. They are the US and increasingly China," he said. In that situation, Delhi cannot be truly non-aligned with a hostile China "sitting at India's frontiers", Mr Tharoor said while speaking at a talk show at the Kolkata International Book Fair. He said that if China were to take a "more directly belligerent posture, there is every likelihood that hard choices will have to be made by India”. Mr Tharoor said that though India is not in a treaty like NATO, it has partnered with the US, Australia and Japan

DNA From 10,000-Year-Old "Chewing Gum" Reveals Stone Age Secrets

DNA from a type of "chewing gum" used by teenagers in Sweden 10,000 years ago is shedding new light on the Stone Age diet and oral health, researchers said Tuesday. The wads of gum are made of pieces of birch bark pitch, a tar-like black resin, and are combined with saliva, with teethmarks clearly visible.  They were found 30 years ago next to bones at the 9,700-year-old Huseby Klev archaeological site north of Sweden's western city of Gothenburg, one of the country's oldest sites for human fossils. The hunter-gatherers most likely chewed the resin "to be used as glue" to assemble tools and weapons, said Anders Gotherstrom, co-author of a study published in the journal Scientific Reports. "This is a most likely hypothesis -- they could of course have been chewed just because they liked them or because they thought that they had some medicinal purpose," he told AFP. The gum was typically chewed by both male and female adolescents. "There

Israel "Praying" Medicines Brought To Gaza Will Reach Hamas Hostages

Israel is praying that an emergency shipment brought to the Gaza border through Egypt, in a deal arranged by Qatar and France, will reach hostages held by Hamas in the besieged Palestinian enclave, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said on Thursday. "We are praying that all the medication .... will reach them, but that's only the beginning," Isaac Herzog told the World Economic Forum in Davos, sitting next to a picture of the youngest of the 132 hostages, one-year-old Kfir Bibas. Isaac Herzog, whose role is largely ceremonial, repeated his government's stand that the Gaza war must result in the removal of the ruling Palestinian Islamist faction Hamas, which carried out a shock cross-border rampage in southern Israel on Oct 7. While saying he was not shying away from the "human tragedy" inflicted on Gaza civilians, Isaac Herzog cast the Israeli offensive as a step towards more peaceful relations with the Palestinians in the future, and as bolstering global se

Citizens In This European Country Now Can't Adopt Children From Abroad

Danes will no longer be able to adopt children from abroad after the country's only adoption agency said Tuesday it was ceasing operations amid reports of irregularities. The Danish International Adoption (DIA) agency said in a statement it was "initiating a controlled wind-up of its activities as a facilitator of international adoptions". The announcement came after Denmark's social affairs ministry suspended adoptions from the six countries with which DIA currently cooperates due to irregularities involving employment regulations. The six countries are the Czech Republic, India, the Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan and Thailand. DIA, which halted adoptions from Madagascar last year amid concerns over possible fraud, said Tuesday it had no choice but to shut down. "International adoption can no longer, under the current conditions in Denmark, be run by an NGO like ours," DIA said. It said it was currently handling 36 adoption procedures, and provided

The deployment, which Shapps characterised as the UK's biggest to NATO in four decades, is aimed at "providing vital reassurance" over the "menace" posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin following his invasion of Ukraine, Shapps said. The British personnel -- from the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Army -- will deploy across Europe and beyond for the military alliance's latest "Exercise Steadfast Defender", alongside personnel from 31 other member countries and Sweden, which is a candidate to join the transatlantic alliance. "Today's NATO is bigger than ever but the challenges are bigger too," Shapps said in a wide-ranging speech in London, in which he warned "the international rules-based order" was fac

"Reunification" With Taiwan Still "Inevitable" Despite Poll Result: China

China said "reunification" with Taiwan was still "inevitable" after president-elect Lai Ching-te won Saturday's pivotal election on the self-ruled island that Beijing claims as its own. The vote "will not impede the inevitable trend of China's reunification", Beijing's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua said in a statement carried by state news agency Xinhua. The results of the vote, Chen said, showed that Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) "cannot represent the mainstream public opinion on the island". Lai delivered an unprecedented third consecutive term for the DPP after a raucous campaign in which he pitched himself as the defender of Taiwan's democratic way of life. Chen said the vote "will not change the basic landscape and development trend of cross-Strait relations". Beijing's stance on "realizing national reunification remains consistent, and our determination is as

"I am standing as an independent candidate to become the next Mayor of London because I want to encourage the free flow of ideas and policies without party ideology and bias. But for a long time, they have not changed the name of our state to Bangla," Mamata Banerjee said in a press conference in Kolkata. The Chief Minister questioned that if Bombay's and Orissa's names could be changed, why not West Bengal. "Bombay's name changed to Mumbai, Orissa to Odisha...but why can't ours be changed? What is our fault," Mamata asked. Highlighting the advantages the state will get if its name is changed to Bangla, which alphabetically comes much earlier than West Bengal, Mamata said that it will help the state's children wh
