"One Rocket Makes All This Go Away": Gazans Demand Complete Ceasefire

Returning home to find their neighbourhood wrecked by bombs, residents of Abu Ta'imah on the outskirts of Gaza's Khan Younis said the Palestinian territory needed a permanent ceasefire, not just an extension of the truce between Israel and Hamas. Local people fled the area on the eastern edge of the city at the start of the war and did not return until the truce, which was in its sixth day on Wednesday. "We were shocked to see this destruction. We were shocked to see our homes, our streets, our lands, our yards and everything demolished," said Gihad Nabil, who was recently married and had been living in Abu Ta'imah with his wife. Standing on a roof with a view of ruined buildings and mounds of rubble as far as the eye could see, he said the area had been home to about 5,000 or 6,000 people before the war. He asked where they would go. "My house is completely destroyed. My brother's home, my uncle's my neighbour's, all of them destroyed. We don

"Most Competitive Visa Regime In UK": Rishi Sunak Amid Migration Pressure

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday took a strong stance in favour of skilled migrant workers in a key speech at the Global Investment Summit here amid mounting pressure on his government to bring down soaring immigration statistics. The British Indian leader vehemently praised the country's "most competitive visa regime", making it the best in the world to invest and do business in. His intervention comes against the backdrop of discontent within his own Conservative Party ranks after last week's Office for National Statistics (ONS) data revealed record-high annual migration to the country and former home secretary Suella Braverman's allies laid the blame squarely at Downing Street's door. "We don't have a monopoly on talent in this country, and we recognise that nearly half of our most innovative companies have an immigrant founder," Mr Sunak said in his speech to a gathering made up of the CEOs of some of the world's biggest bu

Arab States, EU Agree Two-State Solution Answer To Israel-Hamas War

Arab states and the European Union agreed at a meeting in Spain on Monday that a two-state solution was the answer to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, with EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell saying the Palestinian Authority should rule Gaza. Borrell said all EU members attending the meeting of Mediterranean nations in Barcelona and almost all attendees overall had agreed on the need for a two-state solution. The Palestinian Authority must hold elections and improve its functioning but is the only "viable solution" to the future leadership of Gaza, currently run by Hamas Islamists, to avoid a "power vacuum", he said. A current four-day truce is the first halt in fighting in the seven weeks since Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages back into Gaza, according to Israeli tallies. In response to that attack, Israel bombarded the enclave and mounted a ground offensive in the north. Some 14,800 Palestinians have been killed, Ga

The city's air quality index (AQI) that stood at 401 at 8 am had worsened to 415 by 4 pm. Delhi has been witnessing a gradual increase in AQI levels after a marginal improvement on Sunday. The 24-hour average AQI, recorded at 4 pm every day, was 390 on Thursday, 394 on Wednesday, 365 on Tuesday, 348 on Monday and 301 on Sunday. UN Chief Calls For "Multi-Stakeholder Approach" To Solve Gaza Conflict

A UN protectorate in Gaza would not solve the conflict there, the body's Secretary-General said Monday, calling instead for a "transition period" involving Arab nations and the United States and leading to a two-state solution. Antonio Guterres said it was "important to be able to transform this tragedy into an opportunity" -- which, for him, meant moving "in a determined and irreversible way to a two-state solution." This means, after the current war between Israel and Hamas fighters in Gaza ends, "a strengthened Palestinian Authority, assuming responsibilities in Gaza," he said. But the Palestinian Authority cannot go into Gaza backed by Israeli tanks, he added -- meaning the "international community needs to look into a transition period." "I do not think that a UN protectorate in Gaza is a solution," however, Guterres said. Instead, he called for a "multi-stakeholder approach" that would see the US act a

In Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Chouhan Has Eyes On Fifth Stint At Top Post

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the BJP's four-time Chief Minister in Madhya Pradesh, has been cutting a deep furrow through the campaign for next week's election, ready for a fifth stint should the party win. Madhya Pradesh votes on November 17, in which the BJP is hoping for a big comeback, despite the state's history of showing the door to the incumbent.    Convinced that the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is enough to swing the election in its favour, the BJP is carpet-bombing the state with the PM's rallies and roadshows. In a departure from norm in the states it rules, the BJP has not projected Mr Chouhan as its Chief Ministerial candidate either -- raising strong speculation about his being replaced by one of the seven MPs the party has fielded this time.   Many think the jovial, low-profile Chief Minister, who has cultivated the image of mama -- a soft-spoken, approachable maternal uncle -- has upset the party's central leadership.   As evidence, they ci

The Shiite Muslim movement has used "Burkan missiles", for the first time, he said, adding that they could carry "a payload of 300-500 kilogrammes" (660-1,100 pounds). The group has been using attack drones "for the first time in the history of the resistance" in Lebanon, he said, and has been flying "reconnaissance drones" deep into Israel daily, "some reaching Haifa, Acre and Safed" in the country's north. India To Be Added To UK Safe States List: What It Means

The UK government has tabled plans to add India to an expanded list of safe states, which would speed up the process of returning Indians who travel from the country illegally and rule out their chance of seeking asylum in Britain. Draft legislation laid in the House of Commons on Wednesday includes India and Georgia as the countries to be added to the list. The UK Home Office said the move is aimed at strengthening the country's immigration system and help prevent abuse by people making unfounded protection claims. “We must stop people making dangerous and illegal journeys to the UK from fundamentally safe countries,” said UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman. “Expanding this list will allow us to more swiftly remove people with no right to be here and sends a clear message that if you come here illegally, you cannot stay. We remain committed to delivering the measures in our Illegal Migration Act, which will play a part in the fight against illegal migration,” she said. The mov
