Delhi Court Allows Stem Cell Therapy For 2 Children Suffering From Autism

The Delhi High Court on Thursday allowed two children suffering from autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to undergo stem cell therapy for treatment of their condition. The family members of the two children had approached the high court earlier this year with a petition after their treatment was stopped by their doctors on account of a recommendation by the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of National Medical Commission (NMC), which said the use of stem cell therapy shall amount to professional misconduct. A bench headed by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma said there was no law banning the use of stem cell therapy for ASD and even the NMC is yet to take a final decision on the recommendation. "No fruitful purpose would be served by stopping the treatment that is going on at present and therefore the petitioners are permitted to continue the treatment," the bench, also comprising Justice Sanjeev Narula, said. Listing the matter for further hearing on October 3, t

Taiwan, Malaysia, Philippines Join India In Rejection Of China's "New Map"

Governments of the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Taiwan on Thursday joined India in rejecting China's new national map, issuing strongly worded statements accusing Beijing of claiming their territory. China published a new version of its national map on Monday to correct what Beijing has in the past referred to as "problematic maps" that it claims misrepresent its territorial borders. India on Tuesday lodged a strong protest with China over its so-called "standard map" laying claim over Arunachal Pradesh and the Aksai Chin, and asserted that such steps only complicate the resolution of the boundary question. The External Affairs Ministry also rejected China's claims as having "no basis". "Just making absurd claims does not make other people's territories yours," External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said while reacting to the Chinese move. The Philippine government on Thursday slammed China's 2023 edition of its so-cal

The CBI has given a clean chit to former Mumbai police commissioner Sanjay Pandey's company as well as officials from the market regulator and the stock exchange in a case of alleged irregularities in the audit of high-risk brokers.  The agency had, in May 2022, registered a corruption and cheating case against iSec Services Pvt Ltd and officials from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). They were accused of violating the rules while conducting audits of high-risk brokers M/s SMC Global Securities Ltd and M/s Shaastra Securities Trading Pvt Ltd between 2012 and 2019. As per SEBI rules, traders using the controversial 'co-location' facility were categorised as high-risk traders since they were using algorithmic trading, and they were to be audited every six months. Scrapped Article 35A Took Away Fundamental Rights: Chief Justice Of India

The Supreme Court on Monday prima facie agreed with the Centre's submission on pleas challenging the abrogation of Article 370 that the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir is "subordinate" to the Indian Constitution, which is on a higher pedestal. A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, however, did not seem to be in agreement with the plea that the Constituent Assembly of the erstwhile state, which was disbanded in 1957, was in reality a legislative assembly. Without naming the two mainstream political parties of the erstwhile state, the Centre said citizens have been misguided that the special provisions for Jammu and Kashmir were "not discrimination but a privilege". "Even today two political parties are before this court defending Article 370 and 35A," the solicitor general told the top court on the 11th day of hearing the litany of pleas challenging the abrogation of the constitutional provision which bestowed special status to

Police said they received a first call about shots being fired at 7:44 am. Unverified social media posts appeared to show people running from a chaotic street scene, with some falling to the ground. One person died during last year's Caribbean festival, local media reported. Mass shootings have become disturbingly common across the United States, with easy access to firearms in most states. On Friday night, two women were wounded by gunfire in Chicago whil

"Would Rather Play India Story Than Talk About China": Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said she would "rather play the India story" rather than talk about developments in China, which is witnessing an economic slowdown. She made the remarks at the B20 Summit in the national capital while responding to a question on the impact of the slowdown in China on India and the rest of the world. Acknowledging that developments in China is a matter of concern for all, she said "I would rather play the India story". "While I'll keep a watch on the developments happening in China, I am more focused on India's moment, on the opportunities that exist in India, the skills, and the work culture where the young are revving to go forward and prove themselves. So, we should speak for India's strengths and not for the suffering of somebody else," the minister said. The B20 Summit is being organised ahead of the G20 Summit next month. "I am presenting India for the strength it has now. Particular

"Like Losing Your Father": Wagner Chief's Supporters Mourn

Russian supporters of Yevgeny Prigozhin gathered outside the Wagner headquarters in Saint Petersburg on Thursday to pay their respects to the mercenary group's boss, presumed dead after a mysterious plane crash. Prigozhin was branded a "traitor" by President Vladimir Putin after his short-lived rebellion against the conventional Russian army on June 23-24. But he remained popular among Russians, who acclaimed the battlefield achievements of the Wagner paramilitary group -- despite many accusations of abuses and war crimes. "You could say it's like losing your father. He was everything to us, because everyone was always waiting (for) what Uncle Zhenia (Prigozhin) was going to say," said Igor. Like Igor, who was wearing a hat with the Wagner logo and the national flag on it, many Russians eagerly awaited Prigozhin's outspoken videos and audio messages on social media. The clips, full of expletives, were a sharp contrast to the tightly controlled narra

US Puts Visa Curbs On China Over 'Forced Assimilation' Of Tibetan Children

The United States has imposed visa sanctions on Chinese officials pursuing "forced assimilation" of children in Tibet, where UN experts say one million children have been separated from their families. In the latest of a series of US moves on China despite a resumption of high-level dialogue, the Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States would restrict visas to Chinese officials behind the policy of state boarding schools. "These coercive policies seek to eliminate Tibet's distinct linguistic, cultural and religious traditions among younger generations of Tibetans," Mr Blinken said in a statement. "We urge PRC authorities to end the coercion of Tibetan children into government-run boarding schools and to cease repressive assimilation policies, both in Tibet and throughout other parts of the PRC," he said, referring to the People's Republic of China. The United States since 2021 has accused China of waging genocide in another regi

Join The Club: BRICS Faces Rift Over Push For New Members

BRICS leaders meeting in South Africa this week will consider expanding the five-nation bloc at a time of great interest in the group that accounts for a quarter of global wealth. Opinions differ between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa over accepting new members into the loosely-defined club of major emerging economies that is seeking an alternative to the Western-led international order. Here are some key issues as the BRICS convene in Johannesburg: Growing interest South African officials say more than 40 countries have shown some level of interest in joining the BRICS from across the 'Global South', a broad term referring to nations outside the West. Like the BRICS members themselves, these countries represent varying political systems, uneven economic strength, and contrary diplomatic positions, and are as diverse culturally and geographically as Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan and Vietnam, to name a few. Many are traditionally non-aligned nations, s

Donald Trump Surrender In Georgia To Overshadow Republican Debate

Donald Trump plans to surrender to authorities in Georgia on Thursday -- the latest extraordinary step in a series of criminal indictments that will suck every ounce of oxygen from the first US Republican primary debate held just hours before. The former president confirmed late Monday that he would turn himself in to the county jail in Atlanta the day after the debate in Milwaukee, ensuring a spectacle that could dash his rivals' hopes of profile-boosting coverage. "Can you believe it? I'll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED by a Radical Left District Attorney, Fani Willis, who is overseeing one of the greatest Murder and Violent Crime DISASTERS in American History," Mr Trump posted on social media. The runaway favourite for the Republican nomination is accused of leading a "criminal enterprise" to cling to power after his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden, one of four criminal cases targeting him as he bids to return to the White H

"Blacklist Violaters": High Court Steps In To Check Cruely To Animals On Chardham Route

The Uttarakhand High Court has asked the state government to blacklist equine handlers and owners on the Chardham Yatra route who inflict cruelty on animals, saying merely fining them is not enough, and has issued a slew of directions for the welfare of these animals. Setting up barricades to allow only registered operators, allowing animals to rest at night and providing them warm water and health check-ups before the start of journey are among the steps ordered by the high court on a PIL that alleged that horse and mule operators on the Yatra route often subject them to cruel treatment like forcing them to overwork or carry more burden than their bearing capacity for commercial gain. "We are of the view that mere fining of the handlers or filing cases against them for inflicting cruelty to animals, is not sufficient to rein in and discipline the erring handlers/owners of equines," a bench of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal said in its recent order.
