Focus Not Just On Ram Temple: PM's "Mantra For 2024" At NDA Meet

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told the NDA to focus on issues apart from Ram Mandir ahead of the 2024 general elections. At a meeting with MPs from Uttar Pradesh today, the Prime Minister advised the MPs to go local, and "spend more time with the people", sources said. The MPs who attended the meet -- to be a part of a series of meetings -- were from West Uttar Pradesh, Braj and the Kanpur-Bundelkhand area. Sources said the Prime Minister has asked the MPs to talk about local issues in their respective constituencies, go to programmes that people attend including weddings. "PM Modi gave the mantra of 2024 victory to NDA MPs. 'Convince those who are sulky, angry, spend more and more time with the public during elections," a source quoted him as saying. Invoking 'coalition dharma', he said unlike the UPA, the NDA is about sacrifice, not selfishness, sources said.   As an example, PM Modi cited Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who, he said, was m

Appearing in a recent episode of YouTube series called 'Khaane Mein Kaun Hai' , the wife of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy revealed that she is a pure vegetarian and hence one of her biggest concerns is the possibility of the same spoon being used for both vegetarian and non-veg food items. Ms Murty mentioned that while she is adventurous when it comes to her work, she is not the same regarding her food choices. "I am a pure vegetarian, I don't even eat eggs, or garlic. What I am scared of is, that the same spoon will be used for both, vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. It weighs on my mind a lot!" Ms Murty admitted. She also said that when she travels abroad, she seeks out vegetarian restaurants or prepares her own meals. She carries her own bag of food and cooking items that can be easily heated in water, she said. Ms Murty's comment

Olympics Threatens To Erase A Paris Symbol: Over 500 Bookstores Ordered To Move

Booksellers along the river Seine say the Olympics threaten to erase a symbol of Paris after they were told by local authorities that they will have to remove their stalls for the Summer Games opening ceremony in 2024 for security reasons. Around 570 of the famous old stalls that line the river in the capital need to be dismantled and moved, or almost 60% of the riverside booksellers, according to the city authorities. "People come to see us like they come to see the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame, (but) they want to hide us during a ceremony that is supposed to represent Paris," said Jerome Callais, the president of the Paris booksellers association. Paris police have told the booksellers their stalls are within the perimeter of protection for the opening ceremony and need to be removed for "obvious security reasons," the police said in a statement. Paris 2024 organisers expect at least 600,000 people to attend the opening ceremony on the Seine, during which athle

10 Cops Injured After Violence Erupted During Muharram Procession In Delhi

A section of people taking out Muharram processions clashed with police and pelted stones at them, injuring around 10 cops and damaging several vehicles, after they were stopped from changing the designated route in west Delhi's Nangloi on Saturday, officials said. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the "unruly crowd", they said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Harendra Singh said, "Several 'tazia' processions were being carried out in Nagloi area and around eight to ten thousand people participated in them. Belgian Man Kills Mother, Throws Fridge With Her Body Parts In Canal

A man in his mid-30s in Belgium has confessed to killing his mother and sticking parts of her body in a fridge found in a canal in the country's east, prosecutors said Friday. The refrigerator with its grisly contents -- two arms and two legs -- was found Tuesday bobbing in a canal on the outskirts of the city of Liege, triggering a murder investigation. That led detectives to discover the rest of the woman's body -- her head and torso -- in a trash container thrown in a nearby river. A tattoo on the torso helped identify the victim as a woman in her 70s, a spokeswoman for the Liege prosecutors' office told AFP. Her son, born in 1988, was arrested just before dawn on Thursday in a hotel close to Brussels's airport. He apparently was preparing to take a flight to South Korea, the spokeswoman, Catherine Collignon, said. Under questioning by police, the man "confessed", she added, and the investigating judge ordered him charged and taken into custody. Earl

Nitish Kumar's Party Issues Whip To Its Rajya Sabha MPs Ahead Of Voting On Delhi Bill

The Janata Dal (United) has issued a whip to all its Rajya Sabha members, including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Harivansh, asking them to ensure their presence in the House till August 11. The whip, party leaders said, has been issued as voting is expected on the contentious National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which seeks to replace an ordinance negating a Supreme Court order giving power of transfer and posting to the Delhi government. The ordinance has restored the supremacy of the Centre in the matter. With the JD(U) coming out strongly with the rest of Opposition against the bill, political watchers are curious about the stand Harivansh will take as his relations with the party leadership have been a matter of speculation, more so after its national president Lalan Singh assailed him recently over his perceived proximity to the government. The Bihar party has five MPs in the House where the opposition bloc of 'INDIA' is working overtime to arra

He was addressing a rally here, ahead of kick-starting Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai's state-wide 'En Mann, En Makkal (My Land, My People)' padayatra. "When Congress and its allies, including the DMK, go to the people seeking votes, the public would remember the corruption, including the 2G scam and CommonWealth Games scam during the UPA regime, " he said. "Congress-DMK and allies opposed the removal of Art 370; is Kashmir ours or not," he asked. Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Tamil pitch, he said PM Modi honoured Tamil culture by installing the 'sengol' in the new parliament building. Responding to the demands for grants of the mining department, Mr. Sawant told the House during the ongoing Monsoon session of the assembly that nine blocks of iron ore have already been auctioned. The state government has collected Rs 45 crore for the auctioning of the nine blocks, he said. In December last year, the Goa government said it completed the first phase of the auction of mining blocks with four companies winning bids for the extraction of ore from different mineral-rich stretches of the coastal state. Deadly Mix Of Fake News, Rumours Fuelled Manipur Clashes: Officials

The ethnic violence in Manipur that erupted on May 3 and has left over 160 dead has been largely fuelled by rumours and fake news, according to officials from various security agencies who have been monitoring the situation in the restive northeastern state. The despicable May 4 incident in Kangpokpi district, where two women were paraded naked and assaulted by several people, was among the spate of sexual attacks that occurred after a picture of a body wrapped in polythene was circulated in the Imphal valley with a false claim that the victim had been murdered by tribals in Churachandpur. The picture was later found to be that of a woman murdered in the national capital but the fire had engulfed the valley by that time, and what was witnessed the next day put humanity to shame, says an official while referring to the video of the Kangpokpi incident that appeared on social media last week and has sparked massive outrage in the country. On the same day, barely 30 km away, two more wo

Manipur Police has arrested a sixth person in connection with the May 4 parading of two women naked in Kangpokpi district of the state, officials said on Saturday. Three more arrests were made later that day. The fifth accused, 19-year-old youth, was arrested on Saturday. One of the women seen in the video is the wife of an ex-army man, who served as a subedar in the Assam Regiment and had even fought in the Kargil War.  More than 160 people have lost their lives, and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, whil

"Historic Decision": Top Education Official On CBSE's Indian Languages Move

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its schools to consider using Indian languages as optional medium of instruction to make multilingual education a reality. Schools affiliated to the CBSE has now an option of teaching in regional languages from pre-primary to Class 12. The University Grants Commission (UGC) had recently come up with a similar circular for higher education. "This is a historic decision and will open a world of opportunities for many children, besides Indianising teaching and learning systems in the country," Chamu Krishna Shastry, head of the high-powered Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti for the promotion of Indian languages under the Education Ministry, told NDTV today. US Judge Appointed By Trump To Preside Over His Secret Documents Case

When Aileen Mercedes Cannon was appointed a judge by Donald Trump three years ago, she could hardly have imagined she would preside over his trial. But on Friday she set May 20, 2024 as the date to start the unprecedented federal criminal prosecution of a former president in her small Fort Pierce, Florida courtroom. Her assignment to the high-stakes trial has added another layer of controversy to the case, in which Trump is charged with 37 counts of willfully keeping highly classified US documents in his Mar-a-Lago, Florida home, obstruction of justice and lying to federal law enforcement officials. Some of the charges bring up to 20 years in prison, with Cannon to decide the sentencing if a jury finds Trump guilty. The pressure is even higher because the trial will start in the middle of an already intense battle before the November 2024 presidential election, with Trump leading the race for the Republican nomination. It remains to be seen how Cannon will accommodate the courtroo

Setback For Sharad Pawar, All 7 NCP MLAs In Nagaland To Support Ajit Pawar

All seven MLAs of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Nagaland have expressed support to Ajit Pawar in a huge setback for his uncle Sharad Pawar. The seven NCP MLAs of the northeast state in a statement today said all party workers in the Nagaland NCP office will also support Ajit Pawar. Earlier this month, Ajit Pawar and eight other NCP MLAs joined the Maharashtra Shiv Sena and BJP alliance government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. That move split the NCP, the party founded by Sharad Pawar. Ajit Pawar's tactical manoeuvre has parallels to how Mr Shinde broke away from the Shiv Sena when Uddhav Thackeray was the Chief Minister. Mr Shinde eventually gained control of the Shiv Sena. In 2019, the Shiv Sena had ended the alliance with the BJP and formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra with the Congress and NCP. The government collapsed last year after Mr Shinde split the party and joined hands with the BJP to form a new government. Asserting his leaders

Energetic protons accelerated by the flare have reached Earth and are now peppering the top of our planet's atmosphere. This is called a "radiation storm." According to data from NOAA's GOES-16 satellite, it is a category S2 event.
