"Law Of Land Must Be Followed": Minister On High Court's Twitter Verdict

Hailing the Karnataka High Court order dismissing Twitter's plea against the government, Union Minister for Communications and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the law of the land must be followed. The Karnataka High Court dismissed a petition, filed by Twitter last year, which challenged several blocking and take-down orders issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The court ruled that the company's plea was "devoid of merits". The single-judge bench of Justice Krishna S Dixit, which dictated the operative portion of the judgement, also imposed a whopping cost of Rs 50 lakh on Twitter and ordered it to be paid to the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority within 45 days. "Hon'ble court upholds our stand. Law of the land must be followed," Mr Vaishnaw tweeted. Earlier in the day, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that allegations levelled by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey against the Indian go

AAP Drops Plan To Burn Copies Of Delhi Postings Orders Says Matter In Court

Hours after declaring to burn copies of the Centre's Delhi ordinance at its party office here, the AAP on Friday desisted from making such a move as it said the matter was sub judice. Notably, the AAP-led Delhi government on Friday moved the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the ordinance on control of services, saying it is an "unconstitutional exercise of executive fiat" that attempts to "override" the top court and the basic structure of the Constitution. Besides quashing of the ordinance, the government also sought an interim stay on it. Earlier in the day, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will burn copies of the ordinance at the party office in central Delhi on July 3. Addressing a press conference, party chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said copies of the ordinance will be burned across the 70 assembly constituencies of the national capital. In a statement late evening, the party said, "AAP National

Blog: Blog: Back To School With Artificial Intelligence

The emergence of Generative AI, defined by its ability to generate novel, human-like output, will mean that a large majority of students currently in school will experience a work and life environment very different from what they are used to. This paradigm shift is likely to cause huge realignments in society. According to a recent report by Goldman Sachs, upto 300 million jobs across the world are exposed to automation. This has far-reaching implications for India. It is incumbent upon policymakers and regulators in India to rapidly come up with a framework that will allow our future generations to be competitive.  To navigate this challenge successfully, we need to approach the challenge at multiple levels. First, we need to design a curriculum in which AI and Data Science are taught in an age-appropriate manner. Second, we need to rapidly upskill teachers and coaches to impart these skills to students. Third, we need to enable much closer interaction between the industry and p

How Opposition's Mega Meet Turned A Congress Vs AAP Match

The much-hyped Patna meeting on which opposition's hopes for 2024 are riding, hit an impasse today over Aam Aadmi Party's insistence on unanimous support over Delhi bureaucrats issue. The four-hour session, held at the official residence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saw high drama, with the Congress -- which refuses to commit itself -- reading out a 'rap sheet' of AAP. The two parties have been at loggerheads for years, and with AAP growing at the cost of Congress in Gujarat, Punjab and other states, many leaders of the Grand Old Party are not too keen to sign up to help it. AAP has dug in its heels, declaring that it would not be part of the united opposition unless Congress publicly opposes the Centre's executive order taking away the control over bureaucrats in Delhi. It wanted the Congress to spell out its stand at today's meeting. The Congress hit out at AAP's "either-or" stance. Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge read out several instances

Video: Mamata Banerjee Touches Lalu Yadav's Feet Ahead Of Opposition Meet

Mamata Banerjee spoke around the time her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal warned that his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would “walk out” of the meeting if the Congress did not support it in its fight against the Centre's ordinance on the control of services in Delhi. Ms Banerjee deflected questions on Mr Kejriwal's ultimatum, and also on her own rivalry with the Congress and Left in her state. "I cannot say what will happen at tomorrow's meeting. But I am certain we are all here to fight the BJP together, l

Expansion Of Universe Could Be A Mirage Says Study

A potentially contentious new study argues that the universe's expansion might be a mirage, according to Space.com. This rethinking of the cosmos also suggests solutions for the puzzles of dark energy and dark matter, which scientists believe account for around 95% of the universe's total energy and matter but remain shrouded in mystery, as the science news portal further mentioned. In a paper published on June 2 in the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity, Lucas Lombriser, a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Geneva, describes the revolutionary new approach. According to the study named "Cosmology in Minkowski Space," , Scientists said they know the universe is expanding because of redshift, the stretching of light's wavelength towards the redder end of the spectrum as the object emitting it moves away from us. Distant galaxies have a higher redshift than those nearer to us, suggesting those galaxies are moving ever further from Earth. &q

Eventually, these funds were transferred back to ZEEL to show that its associate entities had paid off loans. "The above flow of funds clearly indicates that there was no actual receipt of funds by ZEEL and these were merely book entries to show receipt of funds," SEBI has alleged. The markets regulator has said that it appears that ZEEL's "own funds/funds from other listed companies of Essel Group were used to give an impression that the Asso

'He Declassified The Classified Documents': Trump Lawyer's Defence

Donald Trump's lawyer hinted Sunday at the indicted ex-president's defense strategy in the classified documents case, saying the files were de-classified or personal mementos from his time in office and that the accusations are politically motivated. Trump is set to appear Tuesday in federal court in Miami on 37 charges, including violations of the Espionage act, making false statements and conspiracy regarding his mishandling of classified material, the latest bout of legal jeopardy facing the rebellious Republican. One of his lawyers, Alina Habba, argued Trump had done "nothing wrong" and would not take a plea deal to minimize fallout from the case as he seeks his party's nomination for the 2024 election. "He would never admit guilt, because there was nothing wrong with declassifying documents," Habba told the talk show "Fox News Sunday." "This is completely politically motivated. It's election interference at its best." Ha

Sharad Pawar, addressing a press conference here, said that he would attend the meeting of opposition leaders convened by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna on June 23 and strive for putting up a joint fight against the BJP. "A prime ministerial face is not an issue before us. Even in 1977, no one was projected as the prime minister. The Janata Party won the elections and Morarji Desai was made the prime minister," the NCP supremo said. "If it could happen in 1977, why can't it happen now? We have the responsibility to provide the people of this country with an alternative to the BJP," he said. UK Scrambles Jets Twice To Intercept Russian Planes Near NATO Airspace

British Royal Air Force fighter jets were twice scrambled over the course of 24 hours to intercept Russian aircraft flying close to NATO airspace, the Ministry of Defence in London said Friday. RAF Typhoons based in Estonia and Swedish Gripen fighters were on Thursday evening scrambled to "intercept" a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft and a Su-27 fighter jet "flying close to NATO and Swedish airspace", the ministry said. The Russian aircraft "were not complying with international norms by failing to communicate with the relevant Flight Information Regions (FIRs)" but "remained in international airspace and flew in a professional manner", it added.  On Friday, Typhoons were scrambled again to intercept two Russian transport aircraft flying south from mainland Russia towards Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave wedged between NATO members Poland and Lithuania. The Typhoons were later "re-tasked to intercept" two Tupolev Tu-22M bombers
