Search Operation Underway In Jammu's Rajouri, Weeks After Civilian Killings

Security forces on Saturday launched a search operation in parts of Jammu and Kashmir's border town of Rajouri, where two civilians were killed in a firing incident outside an Army camp early this month, officials said. The search was being conducted by joint teams of the Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Phalyana and adjoining localities, including the Tourism Reception Center and fish pond, they said. The officials said sniffer dogs were also pressed into service during the operation, which was still continuing when last reports were received. France Latest Nation To Impose Covid Tests On Travellers From China

France on Friday joined a growing list of nations imposing Covid tests on travellers from China, after Beijing dropped foreign travel curbs despite surging cases -- and amid questions about its data reporting. Spain, South Korea and Israel also said they would require proof of a negative test for travelers leaving China, and UK media reported that Britain would soon join them. Despite its hospitals and morgues being overwhelmed -- and international concern over the low official figures on infections and deaths there -- China insisted Friday that it had been transparent in sharing its Covid-19 data. On Wednesday, a senior US health official said Beijing had provided only limited data to global databases about variants circulating in China, and its testing and reporting on new cases had diminished. On Thursday, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged China to be more forthcoming, saying it was "understandable" that some countries had introduced rest

Romania Court Orders 30-Day Detention Of Misogynist Influencer Andrew Tate

A Romanian court on Friday ordered the 30-day-detention of controversial influencer Andrew Tate following his arrest for alleged human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal group. Ramona Bolla, a spokeswoman for Romania's anti-organised crime and terrorism directorate (DIICOT), told AFP Friday that four suspects had been placed in pre-trial detention for 30 days following their arrest late Thursday. They are former professional kickboxer Tate, who is a British-US national, his brother Tristan and two Romanian citizens. Tate and his brother were initially detained for 24 hours, but prosecutors had asked a Bucharest court to extend the detention of all four suspects as part of their ongoing investigation. Since the beginning of 2021, the prosecution has been investigating the suspects and had already searched Tate's villa in April. The four suspects allegedly recruited and exploited women by coercing them into "forced labour... and pornographic acts with a view to pr

They agreed to continue technical exchanges to help end the epidemic worldwide as soon as possible, it said. Millions of Chinese were infected in the current surge of Omicron variants in China, causing alarm over the world. Chinese Jet Came Within 20 Feet Of American Military Aircraft: US

A Chinese fighter jet flew dangerously within 20 feet (six meters) of a much larger US air force surveillance aircraft over the South China Sea, the US military said Thursday. In the December 21 incident, a Chinese Navy J-11 fighter pilot "performed an unsafe maneuver during an intercept of a US Air Force RC-135 aircraft," the US Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement. The Chinese pilot flew in front of and within 20 feet of the nose of the US aircraft, "forcing the RC-135 to take evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision," it said. The RC-135, "was lawfully conducting routine operations over the South China Sea in international airspace," the US command said. The incident came as China has sent increasingly large groups of warplanes out over the sea towards Taiwan in a show of force, as Beijing stiffens its claim of sovereignty over the US-backed, self-ruled island. Last weekend, China flew 71 warplanes, including dozens of fighter jets, in military e

Uzbekistan Blames India-Made Syrup For Deaths, Centre Responds: 10 Facts

The health ministry of Uzbekistan, in a statement, said that the children who died had consumed cough syrup Doc-1 Max - manufactured by Noida-based Marion Biotech. The Uzbek authorities have started legal action against some people, "including the local representative of the company there… we are extending necessary consular assistance to those individuals," said foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi. Uzbekistan, he said, has not formally contacted the Indian government about the deaths. US To Impose Mandatory COVID-19 Tests For Travellers From China

The United States will impose mandatory COVID-19 tests on travelers from China, U.S. health officials said on Wednesday, joining India, Italy, Japan and Taiwan in taking new measures after Beijing's decision to lift stringent zero-COVID policies. The officials told reporters that beginning on Jan. 5, all air passengers 2 years old and older will require a negative result from a test no more than two days before departure from China, Hong Kong or Macao. Passengers who test positive more than 10 days before a flight can provide documentation of recovery in lieu of the negative test result, the federal officials said. In an abrupt change of policy, China this month began dismantling the world's strictest COVID regime of lockdowns and extensive testing, putting its battered economy on course for a complete re-opening next year. The lifting of restrictions, following widespread protests against them, means COVID is spreading largely unchecked and likely infecting millions of peo
